SCVTHS ALUMNUS RECEIVES PRINCETON UNIVERSITY APPRENTICESHIP
Carpentry Alumnus Zach Scrape received an Apprenticeship from
Princeton University
Zach Scrape, an Bridgewater Alumnus from SCVTHS' Carpentry Program, was offered the opportunity to take part in Princeton University’s Summer Casual Program with the intent to continue working at the University to complete a four-year Apprenticeship Program. Zach, who received a Bronze medal at the New Jersey State SkillsUSA Championships, was excited when accepting the offer. Zach said he looked forward to working at “such a historic and prestigious” University and contributing to the type of work the SCVTHS Building Trades Department performs. Out of the entire pool of candidates considered, Zach was chosen as one of two who were offered positions in the Summer Casual Program. Once the decision was made, Jamie Simpson, Princeton University Building Trades Manager, and Eileen Tarity, Executive Assistant at Princeton University, came to SCVTHS to personally offer the position to Zach. Mr. Simpson stated that they were very selective in choosing students who have “the right aptitude and interest.” Zach’s high GPA and exemplary carpentry skills made him the quality candidate they were looking for to fill the job. SCVTHS Cooperative Education Coordinator Thomas Heinbach explained that employees in Princeton University’s Building Trades Department are highly skilled artisans. The type of work they perform requires a quality skill set that is second to none. By participating in the Apprenticeship Program, which includes classroom and on the job training, Zach will be able to become a Journeyman worker. SCVTHS ALUMNUS DEBUTS IN CARNEGIE HALL'S PRODUCTION OF "WEST SIDE STORY"

Morgan Hernandez, a 2015 graduate of Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School’s Theater Arts Program and current student at The Boston Conservatory, recently made her debut in Carnegie Hall's production of West Side Story.
“I was very impressed, but not surprised that Morgan more than held her own opposite Broadway veterans. Her performance had grace and depth one might expect from a more seasoned artist,” said SCVTHS Gifted and Talented Theater Arts Program Coordinator Joseph Mancuso.
Morgan was signed to the Abrams Artists Agency as a result of her performances in the annual SCVTHS New York City Showcase. This showcase is for select upperclassmen who have demonstrated a readiness for exposure to industry professionals.
“There is no limit to what she is capable of doing. She approaches the work with great diligence, confidence and hard work with just the right amount of humility.”

DANCE ALUMNUS AND CURRENT ROCKETTE
TO TEACH SUMMER TAP DANCE INTENSIVE CLASSES
Katelyn Gaffney of Clark, a 2010 graduate of the Gifted and Talented Dance Program at Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School and current Rockette, will return this summer to teach master classes as part of the Summer
Tap Dance Intensive.
Since graduation, Katelyn has spent four years performing in Providence, Boston and Nashville as part of the Christmas Spectacular. This spring, Katelyn was part of the Spring Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall and will also be part of the Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall this fall.
The Summer Tap Dance Intensive camp will run July 6th – 9th from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Students in the camp will have classes in Rhythm tap, Broadway technique, Improvisation, Shim Sham as well as Tap History and Footage.
The intensive will culminate with a performance on Thursday afternoon.

GRAPHIC COMMUNICATIONS ALUMNI VISIT
SOMERSET COUNTY VOCATIONAL & TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL
Two alumni of the Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School Graphic Communications program came back to visit the high school and spoke with current students about their career paths and current jobs in the field.
Luis Angulo, a SCVTHS 2007 graduate and SkillsUSA state gold medal winner is currently a manager at Designer Greetings in Edison, where he oversees a graphic design team creating greeting cards. Also visiting was Tia Sheridan, who currently works with Luis and is a 2009 SCVTHS graduate. Luis and Tia spoke with the students about the work they perform and the processes involved in creating greeting cards. They showed the students some of the artwork and cards they have created, and Tia shared parts of her personal portfolio to give examples of what the students should be creating to prepare themselves for college and beyond. Luis drew back on his experiences at SCVTHS to remark on how Instructor Linda Weber-Smith’s teachings helped him in his post-secondary classes and at his current workplace. A major point of emphasis Luis and Tia passed on to the students was to understand both the design and production processes they learn in Graphic Communications which gave Luis and Tia an advantage at Designer Greetings where they are involved with creating greeting cards from start to finish.
