    This Program is a Recipient of 2013 DuPont Pioneer CASE Grant
     
    Students are provided with meaningful support while engaging in hands-on laboratory exercises in the areas of soils, hydroponics, plant anatomy, plant physiology, and animal & plant biotechnology.

    Students will learn and develop leadership skills, build community awareness, and strengthen horticultural knowledge and skills through the national FFA student organization.

    A new course has been added to the Horticultural Technology Program integrating STEM concepts, in a student directed, challenging, and rigorous format.  The new course is a nationally certified CASE course titled Introduction to Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources.  This new course is the first in a sequence of four courses including Plant Science (year 2), Animal and Plant Biotechnology (year 3), and Agribusiness Management, Research & Development (year 4). In all courses students complete hands-on activities, projects, and problems designed to build content knowledge and technical skills within the agriculture, food, natural resources. 

    Course Descriptions

    Intro to Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources (Year 1) - Students will experience exciting “hands-on” activities, projects, and problems. Student experiences will involve the study of communication, the science of agriculture, plants, animals, natural resources, and agricultural mechanics.  While surveying the opportunities available in agriculture and natural resources, students will learn to solve problems, conduct research, analyze data, work in teams, and take responsibility for their work, actions, and learning. 

    Plant Science (Year 2) -  Students will work in teams, exploring hands-on projects and activities, to learn the characteristics of plant science and work on major projects and problems similar to those that plant science specialists, such as horticulturalists, agronomists, greenhouse and nursery managers and producers, and plant research specialists face in their respective careers

    Animal & Plant Biotechnology (Year 3) Students are expected to become proficient in projects involving micropipetting, bacterial cultures and transformations, electrophoresis, and polymerase chain reaction. Research and experimental design will be highlighted as students develop and conduct industry appropriate investigations.  There are plans to add additional CASE courses for a total of four courses in sequence. 

    Agribusiness, Research & Development  (Year 4) - Students learn business management basics, important aspects to research and development, and self direct an independent study.  Areas that will be focused on include: business management, marketing, contracts, designing research, conducting and reporting research and strengthening leadership skills.

    The Horticultural Technology students compete in NJ State FFA Career Development Events to enrich their experience by preparing them for premier leadership, career success, and personal growth.
