2025 SkillsUSA Medalists Students standing on the podium after accepting their medals.

Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School (SCVTHS) students recently competed against other Career and Technical Education (CTE) students from around the State as part of the 2025 SkillsUSA New Jersey State Championships.  Of the 161 students from SCVTHS who competed, 79 received medals, including 34 gold, 29 silver and 16 bronze.  The gold medal State winners are now eligible to test their skills in Atlanta, Georgia, at the upcoming SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC) in June. During the NLSC more than 6,000 CTE students from around the country will showcase their talents and compete in over 100 different trade, technical and leadership fields.  Each industry decides on the skills that students will need to demonstrate during the competitions, and all contests are run with the help of industry trade associations and labor organizations.

The SCVTHS campus and surrounding area got a little cleaner thanks to the efforts of (l-r) Social Studies instructor Meghan O’Reilly Welch, Emily Gallardo of Bound Brook, Valentina Diaz of Dunellen, Taylor Robertson of Somerset, Harry Chase of Branchburg, Agricultural Science instructor Erik Fargo, Jacob Masciulli of Branchburg, Special Education instructor Mary Kreiss-Papalski, and Jake Meier of Hillsborough.

Students joined Agricultural Science instructor Erik Fargo, Social Studies instructor Meghan O’Reilly Welch and Special Education instructor Mary Kreiss-Papalski to remove trash from school grounds and the nearby woods that had not made its way into the refuse and recycling containers located throughout campus. The volunteers represented the Agricultural Sciences department, TEEEM Club, and other student organizations.

“Elementra” creates another world, where the elements – water, air, fire, earth, and metal – are engaged in a constant struggle. As the show progresses, the elements, which have been destroying their world, begin to unite and work together. Each element has its own dance, choreographed by Emily  Watermasysk of Warren, Abigail Stone of Hillsborough, Saige Shoudt of Frenchtown, Lilah Mason of Flemington, and Gillian Conk of Flemington, all seniors in the Dance program. In addition, there are transitions that link each of the Elementra segments together that were choreographed by juniors Michaela Cabales of Phillipsburg and Kacey Cupit of Green Brook and sophomores Samantha Lazovick of Branchburg, Marisa Scott of Bridgewater, and Sierra Martin of Flemington.
