Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School Scholar Athletes Receive Honors

Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School (SCVTHS) is pleased to announce the recipients of several Scholar Athlete awards for the 2024-2025 school year. These students were nominated by their coaches, and have distinguished themselves through exceptional performance both in the classroom and in athletic competition.

These students were nominated by their coaches, and have distinguished themselves through exceptional performance both in the classroom and in athletic competition.
 
The Greater Middlesex Conference awarded two SCVTHS students with Scholar Athlete honors:
 
· Srihaas Chennavajjala, son of Mallika Katiperi and Srinivas Chennavajjala of Hillsborough, is a full-time senior in the Mechatronics, Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing (MEAM) program at SCVTHS. Srihaas is a four-year letterman on the Jaguars Boys’ Soccer Team, where he showed leadership in addition to his athletic skills. He is also an accomplished runner, completing a marathon at age 14, and medaling at the East Coast Championship, competing in the Junior Olympics, and earning a national ranking. Academically, Srihaas is the elected President of the National Honor Society (NHS) and was named a NJTAC Scholar-Athlete in his junior year. He’s a regular on the Principal’s Honor Roll and was nominated for the New Jersey Governor’s STEM Scholar Program. After graduation from SCVTHS, Srihaas will attend Drexel University in pursuit of a five-year BS/MS degree in Biomedical Engineering.

2024-2025 Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School Greater Middlesex Conference (GMC) Scholar Athlete Srihaas Chennavajjala of Hillsborough.

 
· Harley Long, daughter of Pam and James Long of Bridgewater, is a full-time senior in the Law and Public Safety program at SCVTHS. A consistent Honor Roll student with a 3.7 GPA, she also took college-level English and Business courses through Raritan Valley Community College. An accomplished athlete, Harley has played on the Girls Varsity Soccer Team since sophomore year and was team captain as a senior. She also served as Stat Manager for the Boys Basketball Team. Harley has embraced leadership roles as a student ambassador, Vice President of the National Technical Honor Society (NTHS), and Local Reporter for SkillsUSA. Her honors include being named a Stellar Student, induction into both the National Technical and National Honor Societies, and earning first place in New Jersey and sixth nationally in Criminal Justice through SkillsUSA. Outside of school, she is active in her church, enjoys line dancing with friends, works at a dental office, and is considering a career in dental hygiene.

In addition, Daniel Yuh of Somerset and Rohini Routray of Hillsborough were among the student athletes honored during the Greater Middlesex Conference Dan Hayston Memorial Sportsmanship Awards luncheon. They were recognized for consistently demonstrating integrity and respect both in competition and in their daily lives. Even while facing the heightened expectations that come with being student-athletes, the awardees have stood out as exemplary figures — leading by example, inspiring younger peers, and positively representing their schools and communities.

SCVTHS Boys Soccer coach Jack O’Neill is joined by student-athletes Daniel Yuh of Somerset and Rohini Routray of Hillsborough and Girls Soccer coach Meghan Welch. Daniel and Rohini were honored at the 2024-2025 Greater Middlesex Conference Dan Hayston Memorial Sportsmanship Awards luncheon.

 
The Somerset County High School Principals Association, in conjunction with the Somerset County Interscholastic Athletic Association, recognized two SCVTHS students as scholar athletes:
 
· Alyssa Schuster, daughter of Karl and Kyrstin Schuster of South Bound Brook, is a dedicated student- athlete. Throughout her four years of High School, she has been a member of the Student Ambassador Program, Rotary Club, National Honor Society and SkillsUSA. A 3-sport athlete, Alyssa participated in soccer, basketball and softball. She was a 4-year Varsity starter for softball and a 4-year Varsity starter and two-time captain for Basketball, earning MVP her senior year. In the fall Alyssa plans to pursue her career in the Auto Body field.

· Gagan Voonna, son of Thiru and Sujatha Voonna of Somerset, is a driven individual who is passionate about athletics and serving others. He has been a Varsity starter on the soccer team for 4 years, serving as captain during his senior season and playing a key role as a right defender. When not in the classroom or on the field, Gagan participates in multiple volunteer activities, parliamentary procedure, research, and more. He plans on focusing on Alzheimer’s and neurodegenerative diseases while attending Rowan University’s 3+4 BS/MD program, where he will earn a bachelor’s degree in biology and a medical degree.
