This year’s Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School Scholar Athletes are Sonia Purohit of Branchburg and Evan Sapirman of Hillsborough.  Sonia and Evan were recognized for their achievements at the annual Somerset County Scholar Athlete dinner on May 8th.

Sonia Purohit

Sonia, daughter of Keerti and Vinay Purohit, is a two-sport varsity athlete at SCVTHS and a four-year track & field letter-winner at Somerville High School.  She earned senior-year captain status for both track and soccer.  Sonia recorded over 100 career goals and finished her junior soccer season as the second-leading goal scorer in the state.  Senior year, Sonia was the starting guard on the varsity basketball team and finished top-ten in the state for steals-per-game.  She is also the president of the National Honor Society at SCVTHS.  This fall, Sonia plans on majoring in Computer Science and running track at MIT.

Evan Sapirman

Evan, son of Nadine and Louis Sapirman, is a three-sport varsity athlete at SCVTHS. Playing baseball and basketball, he also served as a captain of the soccer team.  During his senior basketball season, Evan was top-40 in the state for both steals and assists, while helping to lead his team to their first state tournament game victory in over 25 years.  He is a member of the National Honor Society and captain of the Academy for Health and Medical Sciences Quiz Bowl team, which placed fifth nationally in 2018.  Evan plans on studying history and philosophy in college next fall.
