During the holiday season, the students and staff at Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School took part in various community events with the hopes of bringing joy to those who are less fortunate.
On December 7th, the annual Holiday Cut-A-Thon & Toy Drive generated a grand total of $722 and collected 52 toys. In addition to the donated toys, students in the SCVTHS Carpentry Program pitched in by creating handmade cars. All proceeds from the event were donated to Cure Search for Childhood Cancer Research and the toys were given to Memorial Sloan Kettering Pediatric Center.
Throughout the month of November, students in the HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) Club and Health Occupations Program collected a total of 57 winter coats during their Jersey Cares Winter Coat Drive.
Additionally, students in Mr. Ed Graf’s Social Studies classes collected food for a family in need. Over the course of a few weeks, Mr. Graf and his students collected over 500 pounds of food for the family.
As part of their yearly activities, students in the TOPS (Technical Occupational Preparation for Success) Program Student Council visited the Bridgeway Care and Rehabilitation Center in Bridgewater and collected toys for the Agapé House in Somerville. SCVTHS Culinary Arts students pitched in by making cupcakes for the Bridgeway event, so the council members could decorate them with the residents during their visit. The TOPS students also colored holiday pictures and gave manicures to the residents. Additionally, SCVTHS staff member Sharleen Leahey played the guitar and led a singalong with the residents.
