With the announcement of remote learning being extended to the end of the academic school year, Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School’s (SCVTHS) instructors are finding new and interactive ways to bring their lessons home.

Electrical Construction students are having weekly “live” projects presented to them by their instructor Michael McClain. Each week, Mr. McClain takes a picture of a possible electrical issue around the house and has his students dissect and explain how to fix the issues. At the end of the week, the class meets virtually and Mr. McClain walks the students through the project step-by-step and addresses the students’ questions, online posts and ideas. Additionally, students are encouraged to post their own home projects into the discussion boards and virtual classes for all to share.

Mr. McClain stated, “While teaching online has its challenges, a benefit has been the increase in individual communication and working with each student and the flexibility it allows.”
