One of the highlights for freshmen in the Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School (SCVTHS) Theater Arts Program is the annual June Freshmen Informal Performance. When the COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus) switched classes to virtual learning, the SCVTHS students and staff needed to make some changes so that the event would still happen.

With limited home technology and distance learning in place, the students adjusted by filming their performances on phones, computers and tablets in order to put together their informal for a virtual release. As an added benefit to the experience, the students were able to learn various film and camera work techniques, in addition to their stage acting.

“Typically this end-of-year performance is used to demonstrate the culmination of what they have learned over the course of their first year in the Program,” said SCVTHS Theater Arts Instructor Laura Swanson. “I must say that I am incredibly pleased with how well the students adapted and rose to the challenge. At the end of the day, we accomplished a good amount of learning and provided our virtual audience with a solid example of the students’ hard work.”

“This is virtual learning at its best and I want to commend both the faculty and students involved for their tremendous effort in bringing this project to fruition,” said SCVTHS Theater Arts Program Coordinator Joe Mancuso. “We teach obstacles are an opportunity for creative solutions. This project is an example of that.”
