at Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School.

Meghan Welch, a Social Studies Instructor at Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School, has been selected as the 2020-2021 Educator of the Year. Ms. Welch is known for being an engaging, creative and collaborative instructor, who goes above and beyond her job duties to help students and staff.

Ms. Welch was teaching students both virtually and in-person when the administrative team, led by Superintendent Dr. Chrys Harttraft and Principal Hector Montes, entered her classroom to announce the award. Ms. Welch explained her reaction as both, “shocked and surprised.” Welch went on to add that she felt “honored and appreciative” to be selected for the award, knowing that she was nominated by her peers.

Supervisor Mr. Chris Lemongelli stated, “Ms. Welch is continually looking for new and creative ideas to engage her students, such as creative activities for lessons, new ways of using technology, and collaborating with other teachers. She is well-liked by all and always takes time to talk and work with students one on one.”

Principal Hector Montes added, “Ms. Welch enriches her lessons through debates and comparison. Students feel empowered to participate in class and share their thoughts without feeling dismissed. Her students are exposed to demanding tasks and rise to the challenge of high expectations with guidance and support from their teacher.”

Welch started at Somerset County Vocational & Technical Schools six years ago, but knew she wanted to be a teacher since she was in high school. Welch always loved working with and helping others, so she decided to dedicate herself to a service-oriented profession. After High School, Ms. Welch attended James Madison University, where she graduated from their five-year teaching licensure Program with a Bachelor’s degree in history and a Master of Arts in Teaching. Today, Ms. Welch still uses that same driving spirit by mentoring students and helping them to find themselves and their passions.

Beyond the classroom, Ms. Welch serves as the Varsity Assistant & JV Girls Basketball Coach, Varsity Assistant Girls Soccer Coach, as well as an advisor for the Connect4Cancer and Debate Clubs.

Ms. Welch credits much of her success to the encouragement and guidance of her colleagues, especially her mentor Mr. Robert Carrig and Teacher Leaders Ms. Johanna Scholl and Mr. Chris Miller.

Ms. Welch is a resident of Hillsborough, where she resides with her husband Eric and their dog Millie. In her spare time, Welch enjoys snowboarding, hiking, exercising, walking her dog, boating, camping and spending time with her family and friends.
