On Tuesday, April 25th, students in the Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School Carpentry Program assisted Raritan Valley Habitat for Humanity with the installation of doors and windows for a two-family house being built in Raritan.
“I am extremely grateful for our partnership with Habitat for Humanity and the opportunities it has provided for our students,” said SCVTHS Supervisor of Career and Technical Education Rob Carrig. “The experience and knowledge gained by working on a new home construction project has been invaluable. Knowing that our Carpentry students are able to take what they have learned in the classroom and apply it to help those in need is absolutely amazing.”
“I am a firm believer in the trades and working with your hands,” said Danielle Matlack, a site supervisor for Raritan Valley Habitat for Humanity. “The trades are a lost art and are really needed. Programs like this are so important because they benefit both the students and the community.”
Raritan Valley Habitat Homeowners are selected through an extensive application process. After being selected, applicants are able to purchase homes and contribute between 250 to 500 “sweat equity” hours, in addition to committing to regular mortgage payments.
